Damn..now that's a sad, sad pic, but believe it or not that's just how job loss in a relationship can feel. It's not a pretty picture by any means and there's definitely nothing glamorous about it, but it may be closer than you think. So what does one do when it happens and what about the relationship? Well..
In today's shaky economy, job security is uncertain and it can have a ripple effect throughout a relationship. It's not just the individual that feels the pinch...Babe feels it too. This can cause more headache and drama in a relationship or it can bring two people closer together depending on the strength of the bond. It's not like people ask for it to happen, but it happens. Learn how to survive it!
When Babe Gets Fired...
They take a blow to their self-esteem and that's off-tops, it doesn't matter who they are. No one gets fired because they did a great job or a good thing, it's because there was some inadequacy on their part. Or at least that's how they feel.
Being fired or even just getting laid off is not the time that they want to hear about their faults and what they haven't done, it's a time to hear encouragement. Uplift your babe and push them to get back out there. Let them know that you are there for them, but at the same time don't enable them to lay around for months playing Xbox or painting their toenails. Be supportive, but not overbearing. Listen and never preach!

But All The Money's Gone...
Yes, the weekend fun money you two took for granted is now as absent as your grandpa's hairline, but it's not the end of the world. Especially, if you planned ahead for the darker times that life has to offer. We as people just can't keep going back to work day in and day out without planning ahead. If not as a couple, then do it for yourself..that's just the smart thing to do. So when moments such as this hit, you have cushion and that can help tremendously to squelch some of the squabbles that come along with radical changes in spending behavior. The person that used to smoke a pack a day now can't afford it or now you've got to put that cruise on hold because the rent needs to be paid. It's tough, but yelling at each other will not accomplish anything, it will only add additional strain to the relationship causing more friction and grief. Work together to get your finances in order. Don't sweat the small stuff, it's just money. |
It's Just Money Huh? But What About The Attitude?
Oh yeah, that. Well, like I said, they are feeling pretty shitty now that they are not a contributor, so attitude and mood swings can be expected. Allow for moments of insecurity, but don't let it consume you. You may have to remind them that just because your still around, you are not a doormat. You will not be their punching bag, redirect their frustration to the real mission. Getting a job! |
And those are just a few insights into some things to keep in mind when you or your babe experience a loss of employment. Remember money is one of the top reasons people get divorced and it's no different for a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship or boy/boy-girl/girl. One has to take the good with the bad, but at the same time, you will get a chance to learn how the other deals with true stress.
